Backa Studiosis an independent film production company based in the heart of Sweden. We produce feature films, documentaries, series and selected commissioned projects, with a strong focus on bold storytelling, clear artistic vision and a distinct cinematic voice.
Founded in 2009 by filmmakers Malin Dahl and Johnny Wernersson, Backa Studios has developed and produced a wide range of critically acclaimed short films and feature films. Our work has reached audiences worldwide through cinemas, television, streaming platforms and international film festivals.
Our filmography moves freely between the intimate and the expansive, the serious and the playful. We are drawn to stories that explore human vulnerability, moral complexity and existential questions — while also embracing dark, absurd and boundary-pushing humor. For us, artistic depth and bold expression are not opposites, but closely connected.

Malin Dahl is a director and screenwriter whose films move in the space between everyday realism and existential intensity. With a distinct personal voice, she explores grief, guilt, relationships and human vulnerability, allowing the familiar to slowly shift into something more unsettling.
Her filmmaking embraces both stillness and emotional depth, as well as a more daring, boundary-pushing expression where dark and absurd humoris given room to exist. At the core of her work lies a desire to push limits and to dig into the parts of ourselves that we often try hardest to hide — without simplifying or offering easy answers.
She works with both short films and feature films, and her work is continuously screened at international and prestigious film festivals, including Uppsala Short Film Festivaland the Gothenburg Film Festival, where she has participated with multiple films over the years. Her films also reach audiences through cinema, television and streaming platforms.
With a background in 2D and stop-motion animation, Malin’s filmmaking is marked by experimentation, strong artistic integrity and international ambition, expressed through a poetic, exploratory and visually conscious cinematic language.

Johnny Wernersson is a producer, screenwriter and cinematographer who has been making short films since childhood. Filmmaking has always been a natural part of his life, and he often takes responsibility for the entire creative process, from idea and script to cinematography, editing and the finished film.
His work is characterized by strong visual momentum, energy and a sharp sense of rhythm. With a fearless approach to form and genre, Johnny moves between the dark, the absurd and the unexpectedly humorous, while keeping a clear focus on the human core of each story.
He works with both short films and feature films, and his work is screened at film festivals and reaches audiences through cinema, television and streaming platforms. Johnny’s filmmaking is defined by hands-on craft, experimentation and a constant drive to push the expressive possibilities of film.
